Mother’s Day Gift Idea – Succulents

What do I give the woman that changed her whole life and body for me, taught me to love myself, and sacrifices her time and energy to help me raise my own baby? The world. I want to give my mom everything. It’s too bad for her that I don’t know anyone who knows someone who can help me get her the world, so I will have to settle for the next best thing – succulents!

I love the idea of giving (and receiving) succulents as a gift, because they are so adorable and can live forever! Don’t get me wrong, I adore fresh flowers, but it is nice to give a gift that you know won’t be tossed away in a week. A great thing about succulents is that they are very easy to plant and look great in any container!

The things that you’ll need to make a perfect succulent gift can be found at your closet nursery and around your house. Easy enough, right?

  • Container of any kind that will not leak
  • Soil for planting succulents

  1. Add enough rocks to your container so that you can’t see the bottom. If you are using a clear container, make sure they are rocks that you like, because they’ll show!

A problem that a lot of people have with succulents is over-watering or under-watering. The rocks help the soil to drain water, but also provide a storage for water to soak into the soil when the plant is thirsty.

2. Fill the container with dirt. Remember that you want to use dirt that is especially for succulents. When I was at the nursery, I just asked a helpful employee where I could find potting soil made for succulents and he pointed me to a bag that had written in bold across the top – GREAT FOR SUCCULENTS! I probably could have figured that out on my own….

3. Place the succulent in the dirt and fill the rest of the container with dirt. If your succulent feels a little wobbly, add a little more dirt and press firmly to secure your succulent.

4. Add some water to the soil and you’re done! Keeping the succulent alive is your next trick! You can print and attach these instructions to your gift to make sure that the plant lives and thrives!

I decided that I want to share the succulent love with lots of women in my life! These babies are headed out to my amazing mother, mom friends, single friends, and friends who long and pray for babies of their own. Who are you going to share the succulent love with this Mother’s Day?
